Take the road on the south side of Maui until it ends at La Perouse Bay. Craggy lava rocks with dots of white coral and shell fragments here and there tossed by the waves fill the scene, with dark blue water coming up to the rocks. No sand to speak of. Now wait for a few hours after dark and the Milky Way illuminates the sky, reflects in the water and dream away as a distant thunderstorm punctuates the scene with the lightening flashes turning the lights on inside the distant cloud. This fantastic reference photo was taken by Stephen Wong, and allowed me to paint it as part of my annual Maui Photo contest, 2023.
