Remembering an Old Fav Dining Spot Hula Grill August 2026
I asked a family member to review our experience!
Hula Grill was extremely crowded with people, with tables packed into every nook and cranny. Waiter didn’t seem too concerned with providing a lasting experience, despite prices suggesting maybe he should. View was spectacular, food was good, drinks not so much.

They really seem to be favoring quantity over quality these days. The Hula Grill that I remember as a kid had atmosphere, character, and wasn’t concerned with turning the table over. But then again I was only a kid at the time, paying attention to literally nothing. I guess customers just have to face it: when you come here you are paying for a spectacular view (especially at sunset!) but unfortunately the place has compromised over the years. I will choose to remember the early 2000’s Hula Grill. Bummer!
Drinks:
Akamai Tai
Came recommended by server. Not very strong, overwhelming juice taste. Feels harsh to say this, but felt like an airport cocktail. Would not order again. Gimmicky 3/10
The Pinot Project
Basic red wine, no strong aromas or flavors to report. Watery. Suggest renaming this
“14 buck chuck”
Underwhelming. 2/10
Big Swell IPA
Unfortunately not pictured, but it was great. $14 for a beer I guess is the norm both at pro sporting events, and when you have a view of Lanai & Molokai. Understandable.
8/10
Food
Ahi Steak
High quality fish, tasted very fresh. Was cooked exactly how they said they would: light sear on the outside, red on the inside.

Bonus was the bed of saimin noodles it came on top of, with a teriyaki flavoring. Actually pretty good. Cleaned the plate. 8/10
Filet Mignon
Nice cut of steak, flavorful and a perfect medium rare sear. Served with mashed potatoes.

This steak’s biggest hurdle was the fact that we ate at DUO the night before and thus, had massive shoes to fill.
Solid. 7/10
Overall? Feet in the sand under the table,

great view, lively atmosphere. Classic, typical touristy Maui corner of the world. You decide.
