Legend has it the Hawaiian islands were created through the Goddess Pele's quest for a home. She traveled from the South Pacific and would try to dig a firepit and her sister, Goddess of the sea, through sibling rivalry, would extinguish it. Pele finally found her home on Kilauea where her sister's waves could not reach her fires.
