For a hundred years sugar cane was the main crop here on Maui; it's water hungry and to help conserve and replenish local aquafers new crops were being tested to grow to replace it. This was the first crop of sunflowers seen on Maui- it actually stopped traffic. Police were called to direct onlookers as soon as the plants started to bloom! Everyone wanted to be in the field with the flowers! This is a plein air piece- I was in the field too!
