Let Me Paint YOUR Paradise

January 31, 2017

A tall man was practically running by my art display in a hurry to get to his next appointment.  Suddenly he stopped (I swear I heard a screeching halt). And stared. And got very animated. He gave me his Instagram name and said " I love your work. You'd really like my photos I've taken here on Maui, you might want to paint one. Take a look". But would any be so compelling that I'd work from a photo vs. go on-site to paint the scene I selected?

A few hours passed, busy with my show and I forgot to check the site. When finally did, I was completely wowed.  Not only were these 'amateur shots' colorful and playful, but they captured a moment in time in Maui that few would see.  Perfect fodder for my paints and canvases.

The next week we talked; I told him how delighted I was with his work. He requested a commission- a painting using his photos.  I selected a few of them, 5 or 6, with the locations of the photos around the Wailea area of Maui.

"Which one would you like me to paint?" I said. His reply: "You pick- surprise me". So I did.  I picked the spot I painted in my piece "The 5 Palms Sunset"  and could frequently visit for my on-site work. I used his photo as my reference for the sunset colors he captured. But I did not tell him this selection. It was going to be fabulous.

I took a phone picture of my work every hour or so as I composed and painted. I knew eventually curiosity would get the best of him and he would want to know which one, and see it. It did.  I sent him progress images, and then the final shot- in the frame, on the wall of my studio. He was thrilled. I had a blast!  Can you image getting a photo every few days of the work YOU envisioned and trusted to someone else to bring to life?

Would you like your vision of paradise captured as a painting for future generations to also enjoy?  Yes? Give me a call.
